How we checked
We drew 3,000 websites at random from 11,604 US home services businesses on October 30, 2026, then fetched each homepage and robots.txt without running JavaScript.
What counted
- Base: 2,635 homepages returned a page. The 365 that failed are left out and are not counted as gaps.
- Business schema: an @type of LocalBusiness, a home services subtype, ProfessionalService or Organization in the page HTML.
- Nearly blank: fewer than 500 characters of visible text before JavaScript.
- Crawler blocking: a site-wide block in robots.txt, across the 2,839 sites we could check. A site with no robots.txt counts as not blocked.
Limits
- Homepages only. Inner pages may be better or worse.
- Schema added by JavaScript is not counted, because a tool that does not run JavaScript cannot see it.
- Firewall blocks do not appear in robots.txt, so blocking figures are minimums.
- Businesses came from a prospect list kept by Berk Hospitality Group, so this is not a census of every contractor.
- We measured whether sites can be read, not whether AI tools name them. Readability does not guarantee a mention.
